AI summary — for doctors, generated from the abstract only
This case report describes the first fully percutaneous (non-surgical) retrieval of a completely embolized MitraClip device that had migrated to the right subclavian artery after a mitral valve repair procedure.
What was studied
A case report describing a patient who experienced complete embolization of a mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER) device to the right subclavian artery, a rare complication, which was successfully retrieved using a percutaneous (catheter-based) approach rather than the vascular surgery cutdown used in all previously reported cases.
Key findings
- Complete embolization of an M-TEER device is described as exceedingly rare, in contrast to single leaflet device attachment, which has been reported in up to 5% of patients.
- This is reported as the first case where the embolized device was retrieved entirely percutaneously, rather than via vascular surgery cutdown as in all prior reported cases.
- The authors emphasize the importance of procedural planning and appropriate equipment selection for this type of retrieval.
Clinical relevance
This case suggests percutaneous retrieval may be a feasible alternative to surgical cutdown for managing this rare device complication, which could reduce surgical risk in similar future cases, though this is based on a single case.

Limitations
This is a single case report; findings cannot be generalized to predict success rates or safety of this technique in other patients.
Doctors successfully retrieved a rare, fully migrated heart valve clip from an artery using only catheter techniques, avoiding open surgery.

Abstract
Single leaflet device attachment (SLDA) after mitral transcatheter valve edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER) has been reported in up to 5% of patients. However, complete embolization of the M-TEER device is exceedingly rare. Device retrievals in all previously reported cases were completed by vascular surgery cut down at the end. In this case, we are presenting a complete percutaneous retrieval of M-TEER device from the right subclavian artery, which indicates the importance of procedural planning and appropriate equipment selection.
