AI summary — for doctors, generated from the abstract only

The authors describe a new surgical technique, the Ganesh pocket, for creating an intrastromal pocket with the Visumax femtosecond laser, which lacks preprogrammed software for this.

What was studied

A technical description of a novel method to create an intrastromal femto-pocket on the Visumax Femtosecond Laser System for lenticule-assisted refractive surgery in high hyperopia, keratoconus treatment and corneal inlay implantation.

Key findings

  • Intrastromal pocket creation has shown promising results for high hyperopia, keratoconus and corneal inlay implantation
  • Several femtosecond lasers have preprogrammed pocket software, but the Visumax does not despite being excellent for lenticule extraction such as ReLEX SMILE
  • The abstract presents a novel technique for pocket creation on the Visumax; no outcome data are reported

Clinical relevance

Surgeons who own a Visumax platform could potentially perform pocket-based procedures without needing a different laser, if the technique is validated.

Who should care

Limitations

The abstract reports no patient numbers, outcomes, safety data or comparison, so effectiveness and safety of the technique cannot be assessed from it.

This is a technique description only; it offers a practical option for Visumax users but needs outcome data before conclusions are drawn.

Abstract

Intrastromal pocket creation for purposes of lenticule-assisted corneal refractive surgery in the treatment of high hyperopia, keratoconus, and corneal inlay implantation has shown promising results. Several femtosecond laser machines have preprogrammed software that aids in the creation of such an intrastromal pocket. The Visumax Femtosecond Laser System (FSL) (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany), however, does not, although it is an excellent system for lenticule extraction procedures such as ReLEX Small Incision Lenticule Extraction. Here, we describe a novel surgical technique using the Visumax FSL to create an intrastromal femto-pocket for purposes described above.
